What kind of leader should you be?

So, what kind of leader should you be? I get this kind of question all the time, and I think I have an answer for you. There are times when you need to be a leader who is authoritative. If the house is burning down, you need to be an authoritative leader. You need to say, "Hey, get your crap together and get outside." Simple as that.


There are times when we need to be a servant leader, and that's when we're trying to help people grow. If you're trying to help people develop and you say, "Hey, get your crap together and get outside," chances are the person is not going to react well to that advice because it's emotional and it's high-stress. You need to pick and choose, as a leader, what type of leader you're going to be based on the situation.


I know some people will disagree with me, saying, "Oh, that's wishy-washy. You should pick the type of leader you're going to be and be that kind." I just don't believe it. I think we should be flexible in our leadership, but we need to have a strong core. Our strong core is our values and the things that we hold like, "Hey, I want to be honest." No matter if you're an authoritative leader, or you're a servant leader, you're an honest leader.


I think whatever your core values are, those stay the same no matter how your leadership style is flexing. This lets you get the best results from the people that you're working with and for. I think if you as a leader have that in your heart that you want to help people, the way you support them depends on the situation that you're trying to help them through. For me, that's the way I lead. There are times when I'm authoritative. There are times when I'm a servant leader. There are times when I'm not the leader at all. I work on being a really great follower. It just depends on what the situation calls for.
